Black in Latin America Virtual Film Series

The African Diaspora International Film Festival presents Black in Latin America, a virtual film series exploring the histories, identities, cultures and contemporary experiences of Black communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. From Brazil and Colombia to Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Chile and the Dominican Republic, these films illuminate stories of migration, resistance, belonging, heritage and self-determination, offering a rich portrait of the African diaspora and its enduring influence across the region.

Angels on Diamond StreetIn a Philadelphia church, three women dedicated to social justice come together through a community soup kitchen that becomes a place of refuge for those in need. When a Mexican immigrant and her children seek sanctuary from U.S. immigration authorities, their story brings questions of solidarity, borders and collective action to the forefront. Black Mexicans

Set among the Black population of Mexico's Oaxacan coast, this intimate drama follows Juana, Magdalena and Neri as they navigate a complicated relationship marked by love, pain and dependence. When Juana is diagnosed with a terminal illness, Magdalena is forced to confront her own choices and find the clarity to reclaim her life. 

EL Mestizo

On Venezuela's Caribbean coast, José Ramón struggles to understand where he belongs as the son of a white aristocrat and a Black fisherwoman. Caught between family, desire, social expectations and unequal structures of power, his search for identity exposes the tensions surrounding race, class and belonging. 

Gurumbé: Afro-Andalusian Memories

Long before modern conversations about the African diaspora in Europe, Africans were shaping the cultural life of Spain, leaving their mark on music, dance and society. Gurumbé recovers this largely overlooked history, tracing the lives and legacies of African communities in Andalusia and the ways music became a powerful means of preserving identity. 

Kafe Negro: Cuba & the Haitian Revolution

Coffee becomes the starting point for a fascinating story of migration and cultural exchange between Haiti and Cuba. Through the movement of Haitian workers to Cuba, the film explores how migration transformed the island's culture and demographics while establishing coffee cultivation as an important part of its history.

After fleeing Colombia's war-torn Pacific coast, Afro-Colombian teenager Tomás struggles to find his place in Bogotá, where racism and exclusion complicate his new life. When his younger brother disappears, Tomás's search through the city becomes a journey into his own past and toward a new understanding of who he wants to become. 

Quilombo

Carlos Diegues' acclaimed historical drama brings to life Quilombo dos Palmares, the 17th-century Brazilian community established by formerly enslaved people and other marginalized groups. Led by Ganga Zumba, this extraordinary experiment in freedom and self-governance becomes a powerful story of resistance against Portuguese colonial rule and a meditation on the meaning of liberation. 

Sugar Cane Malice

For Makenya, a Dominican-Haitian teenager living in a batey surrounded by sugarcane fields, an unwanted pregnancy forces her to confront adulthood sooner than expected. Against the realities of her community and her own uncertain future, she must navigate questions of identity, womanhood and choice. 

Susana Baca: Memoria Viva

This portrait of celebrated Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca explores her lifelong commitment to preserving and celebrating Black Peruvian culture. From her research into Afro-Peruvian traditions to her distinctive interpretations of the lando, Baca's music becomes a living connection between history, identity and cultural memory. 

The Valley of the Black Descendants

In Chile's Azapa Valley, descendants of Africans brought to the region during the era of slavery are working to reclaim a history that has long been overlooked. As they organize the country's first African census, their campaign for official recognition becomes a powerful act of cultural preservation and affirmation of Black Chilean identity.
